Chicken and Dumplings for Pa-Pa
Today was a cooking day. The girls and I made chicken and dumplings for “Pa-Pa” for his birthday. Since it was a special occasion, they both helped. And, you can see from the aftermath that they had a wonderful time.
I use the dumpling recipe from one of my cookbooks entitled The Best Recipe. I don’t use the whole recipe from the book called “Chicken and Dumplings with Aromatic Vegetables,” because I like the more traditional Southern version of stewing a chicken and simply adding the dumplings to the broth after picking the bones clean. This is the way good Southern folks do it without all the fancy stuff. But, I like the baking powder dumplings that are given on page 162.
One note: Today I was out of sweet milk, so I used buttermilk, instead. Yum! A great improvement! Yippee for happy discoveries born from invention!
And, the kitchen…well, the mess was worth the smile on Pa-Pa’s face as he ate chicken and dumplings with his girls.

I can just see Pa Pa when he saw the aftermath. I can see him with a big smile on his face. I love the story. Your daughters are so fortunate to to have a Mom like you.
Hi, James Smithson sent me to your place and I’ve very much enjoyed my visit here. I’ve been wandering around reading and just wanted to say, “keep up the good work.”
